Process innovation for the Biorefinery
Biorefining is a critical pillar of the growing bioeconomy and involves converting biomass into diverse bio-based products and components for their use across diverse sectors, including the chemical industry.
The challenge
Liquid fossil fuel has traditionally been the base of countless products that societies around the globe rely on, already for decades now. This includes plastics, colorants and fertilizers.
The low price of crude oil continues to impact on efforts -both entrepreneurial and financial- to develop and implement the bioeconomy through bio-based chemicals or white biotech. This creates a barrier to developing scalable models for using renewable feedstocks, affecting pricing and competitiveness.
Many investors want to have the concepts tested as well as demonstration plants to assess the scalability of white biotech initiatives.
Our take
Developing alternatives and renewable technologies for industrial processes, GEA is a global supplier of key solutions for biotechnological applications across renewable resource industries.
GEA´s experience with biorefinery solutions covers nearly every type of renewable resource and industry application. This includes efficient production of biofuels, stillage processing of biopolymers and bioplastics as well as of components and ingredients for the food and feed industries.
Foster Innovation
We have partnered with customers and diverse global key players to establish and test biorefinery models for many applications, some examples include the production of assets from the renewable feedstocks to be used as building blocks in bioplastics, leveraging microalgae for their use in biopesticides and feed; producing rubber extracted from dandelions, protein from insects and waste streams from food production
