Raw milk and whey must undergo pasteurization and cream separation before they can be used as the basis for nutritional formula products. Raw milk contains approximately 4% fat, and separating the cream to produce non-fat milk can be carried out using either a warm milk separation process, or via a cold milk process that allows further treatment of the skim milk to generate products such as low heat formulas.

Clarification for improving raw milk quality
The quality of raw milk or whey can be improved as soon as it arrives at the dairy, by passing it through a clarification stage to remove impurities that might affect downstream processing and final product quality. GEA separators are ideal for eliminating contaminants such as cells or blood from milk, removing cheese fines from whey, and cleaning the milk or whey of any dirt or dust from milking machines, milk lines and transport vehicles.
Hygienic, efficient clarifiers from GEA are easily integrated into a process line. Suitable for use with either cold or warm milk, our systems promise minimal product loss, and negligible leaching of valuable milk components, such as proteins, into the waste solids. Any resulting sludge from clarification can be routed straight to a neutralization or wastewater treatment plant, and the cleaned milk or whey transferred for processing.
Ensuring microbial safety
Every nutritional formula producer needs to guarantee optimum hygiene and microbiological safety, so a bacterial clarification step to remove any potential contaminating microorganisms is essential.
Ultimately, you want the assurance of effective microbiological control, but without harsh treatment of milk or whey, to ensure that all the key nutritional components are retained. Rather than just inactivate microorganisms, our bacterial separation solutions physically remove bacteria and spores from the product. This can equate to reduced heat treatment time and temperature during downstream pasteurization, which further helps to maximize the nutritional value of the end product.
