Alcohol
Alcoholen zijn belangrijke oplosmiddelen en bronsubstanties voor talrijke producties in de chemische industrie.
Alcoholen met verschillende OH-groepen worden gebruikt voor polymerisatie. Behalve natuurlijke alcoholen, zoals bijvoorbeeld glycerine, worden alcoholen geproduceerd door fermentatie van basissubstanties die zetmeel of suiker bevatten.
Alcoholen met een korte keten, zoals methanol en ethanol, worden geconcentreerd door middel van distillatie. Alcoholen met langere keten en met een lagere stoomvolatiliteit kunnen worden geconcentreerd in valfilmverdampingsinstallaties. De separators zijn vaak voorzien van scrub-kolommen om productverliezen via de stoomfase te minimaliseren.
De alcoholen die het meest worden geconcentreerd in distillatie-installaties zijn methanol en ethanol. 2-propanol en n-butanol worden geconcentreerd in verdampingsinstallatie.
