Functionele dranken zijn meestal plantaardige of vruchtendranken met een extra ingrediënt gericht op een specifieke functie die belangrijk is voor de gezondheid.
Er worden verschillende types ingrediënten gebruikt, bijvoorbeeld aminozuren, vitaminen, minerale zouten, anti-oxiderende moleculen, vezels, probiotische micro-organismen en prebiotisch factoren (oplosbare vezel).
Er is een stijgende vraag naar functionele dranken, aangezien consumenten gezonde en natuurlijke producten willen zonder hun toevlucht te hoeven nemen tot dieetvoeding. Dieetvoeding die normaliter geassocieerd wordt met een matige smaak en een negatieve look-and-feel.
Sportdranken zijn bedoeld als supplement om water en elektrolyt aan te vullen en om energie te geven na lichamelijke inspanning. Ze omvatten een breed assortiment producten, dat varieert van complexe voedingsoplossingen voor professionals tot gangbaardere producten voor occasionele consumenten. Deze producten zijn op grote schaal verkrijgbaar in de grote detailhandelketens.
Er zijn functionele verschillen in dit soort dranken:
Isotone dranken: deze hebben hetzelfde zoutgehalte als lichaamsvloeistoffen; ze zorgen daarom voor een snelle aanvulling van vloeistoffen en mineralen die verloren gaan door transpiratie en leveren energie dankzij de koolhydraten die ze bevatten;
Hypotone dranken: deze bevatten moleculen in lagere concentraties dan in bloed; daardoor hebben ze een snellere reïntegrerende werking dan isotone dranken, die echter niet zo gunstig is als die van koolhydraten.
Hypertone dranken: (met meer moleculen in vergelijking met bloed) worden normaal gesproken gebruikt om koolhydraten in te nemen na lichamelijke oefening, om de glycogeenvoorraad in de spieren aan te vullen.
Een van de belangrijkste stimulerende marketing- en productiefactoren van deze functionele drankenmarkt is het feit dat zij geen conserveringsmiddelen of cafeïne bevatten en bereid worden zonder toevoeging van koolzuurgas. De moeilijkheid die deze markt kent is het evenwicht tussen suikergehalte, functie en smaak. Echter de verwachting is dat de expansiemogelijkheden in opkomende markten dit probleem wegneemt.
