New GEA solution uses computer vision and machine learning for real-time cow recognition in rotary parlors.

GEA is launching DairyNet Cow Verification, a new camera-based solution for cow identification. The system combines computer vision and machine learning to verify each cow's identity directly in the stall and automatically correct RFID recognition errors. This expands GEA's portfolio with a system that gives farms operating rotary parlors an even more reliable data basis for their management.
Reliable identification directly in the stall
Unlike RFID-only solutions, DairyNet Cow Verification also identifies each cow based on its visual signature. After the animals enter the rotary platform, several cameras capture each cow from defined angles directly in the stall. The system analyzes body shape, structural traits, and individual coat pattern, comparing these parameters with historical image data. Based on this, Cow Verification confirms or corrects the animal identification number with high accuracy. If RFID data is missing or incorrect, the system corrects it in real time. It works entirely in the background, is self-learning, and continuously improves its recognition accuracy. The application integrates seamlessly with the GEA DairyNet herd management system, ensuring precise and reliable data capture.
Target group: farms facing RFID challenges
The solution is designed for all farms operating GEA rotary parlors that place high value on data quality, automation, and reliability – particularly those with recurring RFID challenges such as limited read range, unfavorable ear-tag orientation, signal interference from metal or water, multiple animals in the antenna area at the same time, and missing or defective RFID transponders. Using DairyNet Cow Verification requires an existing RFID recognition system and a walk-through antenna for the learning phase and for new animals. It also requires the DairyNet herd management system; accordingly, the system can be retrofitted on all DairyNet-compatible GEA rotary parlors.
Higher data integrity for well-founded management decisions
DairyNet Cow Verification significantly reduces operational errors in the milking process. Reliable verification prevents typical mistakes such as incorrect feed allocation or assigning milking data to the wrong animal – even during high animal traffic at the rotary entrance and regardless of the cow's head position. Another advantage becomes apparent with animals that have lost a transponder or ear tag: after the learning phase, the system can continue to reliably recognize these animals temporarily. This preserves valuable data and gives farms time to replace the transponder or ear tag.
With consistently validated data, farmers can analyze and manage feeding, animal health, and herd management more precisely. At the same time, accurate records improve traceability and support compliance with operational and regulatory documentation requirements.
GEA will present DairyNet Cow Verification at this year's EuroTier, taking place November 10–13, 2026, in Hanover, Germany (Hall 13, booth C25).
