Extractor
Discover GEA CARINE, meticulously designed to achieve the highest yield while preserving delicate aroma compounds.
The GEA CARINE coffee extractor system has been specifically designed to deliver the highest possible yield while ensuring the preservation of delicate coffee aroma compounds. Equipped with 10 percolator columns, two more than the GEA FIC®, the two additional columns operate at a higher temperature, 185–195 °C, to deliver impressive yields of up to 60%. GEA CARINE extraction is applicable for both cold and hot brew coffee processing.
One of the major challenges in coffee extraction is balancing yield and quality, and the CARINE system excels at extracting the maximum amount of soluble coffee compounds while maintaining high-quality aroma characteristics.
Traditional extraction methods often sacrifice aroma quality for higher yields or are unable to achieve high extraction efficiency without compromising taste. The CARINE system solves this problem by first extracting valuable coffee aromas at lower temperature, followed by a high-temperature hydrolysis extraction, which enables manufacturers to achieve superior extraction efficiency while retaining the coffee’s distinctive aroma and flavor profile. The CARINE system is carefully controlled and supervised by a PLC-based control system. With advanced high-temperature extraction capabilities combined with exceptional operational flexibility, the CARINE is unlike conventional percolation extractors. Its 10 percolator columns allow for an extended extraction cycle to optimize the breakdown of coffee solids while minimizing the risk of undesirable off-notes.
Furthermore, it offers the ability to switch seamlessly into FIC® mode, providing an alternative operational method for producing a higher quality end product. This level of adaptability is unique in the industry and gives you the power to tailor your extraction process to meet specific market demands.
Benefits and key features:
The extraction process in the CARINE system has been engineered to maximize efficiency while maintaining coffee quality. The system begins by pre-wetting the roasted and ground coffee to ensure uniform hydration, and partial de-gassing of CO₂, which helps prevent channelling during extraction. Once pre-wetted, the coffee is vacuum-filled into the percolator columns, minimizing air pockets and ensuring a tight packing density for optimal extraction performance.
The first extraction of the fresh roast coffee is conducted at moderate (approx.130°C) or low temperatures (down to 20°C for Cold Brew) to preserve the coffee’s high quality aromatic properties. This extract is separated from the following high temperature (up to 190°C) produced extract (hydrolysis), ensuring a high-quality, high yield product.
The CARINE system offers a production capacity ranging from 125 to 1500 kg/h of soluble solids in the extract, making it suitable for both small and large-scale industrial production. Pilot plant size is also available with a capacity of 7 kg/h soluble solids in the extract. Its ability to handle different coffee types and extraction modes makes it a valuable asset for coffee manufacturers seeking optimal efficiency and flexibility.
With resource-efficiency a key consideration in modern coffee production, the CARINE system is designed with environmental efficiency in mind. The system optimizes water usage by ensuring precise control over the extraction process, reducing waste and minimizing overall resource consumption. Additionally, its energy-efficient design helps lower thermal losses, contributing to a more resource-efficient coffee processing operation.
Safety is at the forefront of the CARINE’s design, ensuring that operations run smoothly and securely in line with the highest industry safety standards. As the system is fully enclosed, the risk of contamination is reduced alongside the risk of exposure to high temperatures, creating a safer working environment. Automated controls further enhance safety by reducing the need for manual intervention, which minimizes the potential for operator error.
Efficiency is a hallmark of the CARINE system. The carefully engineered percolation design allows for faster processing times compared to traditional extraction methods, while high extraction rates contribute to reduced raw material costs, enabling you to achieve maximum profitability. Additionally, the automated control system maintains process consistency, reducing downtime and improving overall operational efficiency.
At GEA’s state-of-the-art test center, you can trial the CARINE system with your specific coffee blends before committing to full-scale implementation. This allows you to optimize process parameters, ensuring the best possible extraction efficiency and product quality.
