CO2 Value: Powering the Carbon Circular Economy

With its background in brewing technology and carbon reduction, GEA is bringing CO2 recovery capacity to a growing number of breweries looking to lower their carbon costs, dependency and footprint.

"We’re very pleased with recovery rates so far and expect to be able to generate five million kg of CO2 at full capacity. This also means we avoid having to purchase and transport some 200 truckloads of CO2, which further reduces our costs and carbon footprint."

Energy recovery for more circularity

In addition to complete CO2 recovery plants, GEA designs many of the system components, such as compressors, dryers or purifiers, and can install or replace these in both GEA and non-GEA systems. Taking the circularity approach one step further, GEA also offers energy recovery solutions to recycle the waste heat or evaporation energy generated during CO2 recovery and reuse. Straub explains how this works: “When liquid CO2 is evaporated for re-use in beverage production, this evaporation energy can be used elsewhere for cooling – either for pre-cooling of CO2 before liquefaction or for cooling the brewery's refrigeration medium, normally glycol, to relieve the central refrigeration network.” Another option is to use the heat generated by CO2 compression during recovery – which is often simply released into the environment – for processes in other parts of brewery, lowering the heat input required to brew beer. “These options can be used individually or combined to further reduce operational costs and carbon footprints,” says Straub.
