Carbon Capture Solutions

GEA CEBO Carbon Capture

State-of-the-art, high-performance amine-based CO2 capture plants in various sizes for CO2 capture from a wide range of exhaust gas streams. Modularized and standardized concepts for rapid project implementation according to the needs of our customers in the cement, iron and steel, glass, bioenergy and chemical industry.

What is CEBO Carbon Capture?

Carbon Capture is a process that captures carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from industrial processes and power generation sources. By capturing CO2 before it is released into the atmosphere, we can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate their impact on climate change.

How it works?

Understanding GEA Carbon Capture Technology:

The principle of CO2 capture by physical-chemical absorption processes has been known for decades and has proven in the processes of sour gas treatment, natural gas or biogas processing and ammonia production. The challenge for CCUS today is to adapt these concepts for oxygen rich flue gas from heavy industry. This is clearly a strength of GEA, as GEA has been active in off-gas treatment in relevant industries for decades and has a high level of knowledge about the accompanying trace substances and critical points when integrating a CO2 capture process into an existing off-gas line.

GEA Carbon Capture Systems use liquid scrubbing by means of an amine chemistry to capture CO2 from flue gas streams. The amine-based process has a technical readiness level of 9 (referred to as ready for commercial use) and thus represents the state-of-the-art. In addition, the amine-based CO2 capture is a tail-end CO2 capture solution which enables fast implementation into existing plants and minimizes negative impacts on upstream processes.

The process configuration of GEA Carbon Capture Systems is designed as a combination of absorber and desorber columns: The flue gas enters the CO2 capture unit, i.e. the absorber column, where chemical absorption of carbon dioxide into the amine solution takes place. The CO2-depleted flue gas is discharged directly into the environment at the top of the absorption column, after amine emissions have been cleared by additional purification stages.

From the sump of the absorber column, the rich amine solution is fed into the desorber column. Before this, the solution passes through a heat exchanger for preheating. In the desorber, the solution is further heated to release the chemically bound CO2. The CO2 can then be recovered as a product stream at the head of the desorber column after condensation of water. The purity of the CO2 stream is typically > 97 % (2 bara, 40 °C), with the residuals consisting mainly of water vapor. Depending on the intended use of the CO2, further purification steps are carried out.

The amine solutions used by GEA are commercially available and are continuously tested in various industries with GEA´s own pilot scale units. The entire chain from pretreatment to separation of the gaseous CO2 is designed based on numerous experimental data obtained with regard to gas composition, separation efficiency, and solvent performance.

And the best message for our customers: Based on our process guarantees there is no risk for our customers when engaging GEA for a CC project.
