Our performance

GEA has used group-wide KPIs since 2016 to monitor its ESG performance. Each year, we report on material topics relevant to the company‘s economic, environmental and social impact.

GEA has used group-wide KPIs since 2016 to monitor its ESG performance. Each year, we report on material topics relevant to the company‘s economic, environmental and social impact covering:

  • People
  • Sustainable engineering
  • Environment
  • Compliance & governance
  • Supply chain

Since 2019, the compensation of GEA Executive Board members has been tied to aspects of sustainability.However, with the approval of a new remuneration scheme at the Annual General Meeting in April 2021, Executive Board compensation will be more strongly tied to strategic ESG targets,linking GEA’s business growth and success to the achievement of its sustainability targets.

Measurements based on international norms and standards

GEA’s ESG performance reporting isprepared in accordance with the standards set by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI, “option: Core”). GEA Group Aktiengesellschaft is certified to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018. Certification under ISO 50001:2018 is performed at site level.

GEA is a CDP Supplier Engagement Leader

CDP Supplier Engagement Leader

To make truly meaningful reductions in harm to the environment, businesses must cascade action down the entire supply chain. We’re proud to have earned a place as a leading company on CDP’s 2022 Supplier Engagement Leaderboard, for taking action to measure and reduce climate risk within our supply chain. This places us among the top eight percent of the more than 13,000 companies evaluated.

ESG rating agency assessments

Our ESG performance is regularly assessed by ESG rating agencies. ESG ratings provide stakeholders with information that is important to their investment decisions. Most notably, GEA has received top ratings and rankings from: EcoVadis, CDP, Sustainalytics and MSCI.  

GEA is also listed on the DAX 50 ESG, Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index and MSCI Global Sustainability Indexes.

Ecovadis sustainability rating

The ‘Gold’ rating from EcoVadis places GEA in the top five percent of all companies worldwide for sustainability management.

CDP A List 2022 - Climate

GEA holds two CDP leadership rankings for performance and reporting transparency: an ‘A’ for tackling climate change and an ‘A-’ for acting to protect water security.

MSCI ESG AAA

In 2024, GEA received a rating of ‘AAA’ (on a scale of AAA-CCC) in the MSCI ESG Ratings assessment.*

FTSE4Good Index

Following the index review in June 2023, GEA remained in the FTSE4Good Index Series. This is designed to measure the performance of companies that demonstrate strong environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices.

ISS ESG Prime

In September 2022, GEAs ‘Prime Status’ (leadership in its industry index group) was confirmed.

Sustainalytics

In 2024, GEA received an ESG Risk Rating of 14.2 and was assessed to be at Low Risk of facing material financial impacts from ESG factors. GEA’s ESG Risk Rating is in the 2nd percentile (1st=lowest risk) in the Machinery in...

In 2024, GEA was recognized by Sustainalytics as an ESG Industry Top Rated company.

Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index

Following the index review in December 2023, GEA remains a component of the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index and was also included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index.

GEA recognized by CDP

GEA scores an ‘A’ for its transparency and performance on climate change by global environmental non-profit organization CDP. This marks the third time in a row that the mechanical engineering company has been included in CDP’s A list, which is the highest possible rating. According to CDP, GEA is only one of a small number of companies that achieved an ‘A’ – out of 21,000 companies scored.

GEA and its employees donate EUR 250,000 in aid to Ukraine

GEA and its employees have donated EUR 250,000 to the German Red Cross for the victims of the war in Ukraine. As part of a global fundraising campaign, GEA staff members from 42 countries collected EUR 125,000. The company then matched their contribution.
GEA Refrigeration Technologies’ commitment to delivering sustainable cooling and heating systems in the form of innovative heat pumps for heat decarbonization and the use of natural refrigerants aligns perfectly with the UNEP Cool Coalition’s objectives. As a member of this initiative, GEA undertakes to manufacture refrigeration equipment that is highly efficient and relies on natural refrigerants, such as ammonia and carbon dioxide with low to zero global warming potential. GEA signs on to UNEP Cool Coalition

Fostering dialog between governments, business, finance and civil society, the initiative aims to drive the use of efficient, climate-friendly cooling in urban environments, buildings and industrial processes worldwide.
