Key applications

Food, beverage and ingredients

Distillation can be applied to the production and purification of food-grade ingredients, flavor compounds, and beverage alcohols. Typical applications: Spirits Beverage alcohol Flavors and extracts Food ingredients Aroma recovery Fermentation-derived products

Solvent recovery and recycling

Continuous distillation is widely used to recover and purify solvents from production processes. Instead of disposing of contaminated solvents, manufacturers can separate impurities and reuse valuable solvents within the plant. Typical solvents include: Ethanol /Methanol Isopropanol (IPA) Acetone Toluene Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK)  N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP)  Dimethyl Phthalate (DMP)

Chemical product purification

Many chemical reactions produce target products mixed with by-products, unreacted materials, and solvents. Continuous distillation enables the efficient separation and purification of valuable compounds to meet product specifications. Typical applications: Organic chemical production Fine chemicalsSpecialty chemicals Petrochemical intermediates Plastic and polymer intermediates

Biofuel production

Distillation is a key step in bioethanol or biodiesel -glycerin production, separating ethanol from fermentation broth and concentrating it to the required purity level. GEA continuous distillation systems can be integrated with energy-saving technologies such as meVap® vapor recompression to significantly reduce steam consumption. Typical applications: Fuel ethanol Industrial ethanol Beverage alcohol production Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) value chains

Pharmaceutical manufacturing

The pharmaceutical industry requires highly reliable and hygienic separation systems for solvent recovery and product purification. Typical applications: API production Solvent recovery Intermediate purification Pharmaceutical alcohol recovery Fine chemical manufacturing

Biochemical and fermentation industries

Biotechnology and fermentation processes often generate valuable compounds that must be separated from water, solvents, or other process components. Typical applications: Organic acids Fermentation products Amino acids Bio-based chemicals Bio-based or recovered feedstocks

Waste stream valorization and resource recovery

Many waste streams still contain valuable chemicals that can be recovered using distillation technology. Typical applications: Solvent-contaminated wastewater Process condensates Industrial waste streams Chemical recovery processes

Polymer and plastics production

Continuous distillation plays a critical role in polymer production by recovering monomers, solvents, and process chemicals throughout manufacturing operations. Typical applications: Polymer intermediates Styrene recovery Solvent purification PET production Specialty polymer manufacturing

Chemical production with resource recovery

As industries move toward bio-based and circular production concepts, continuous distillation is becoming a key enabler of resource recovery and process circularity. Typical applications: Green solvents Bio-based chemicals Circular production processes Chemical recycling Solvent regeneration

The water equation

Across Europe, drought is a recurring reality – and no longer confined to the south. While water increasingly shapes where industries locate, its value is determined by local context. There are many technological routes to water efficiency in industrial processes, but location, energy needs and other factors are also key.
