Steffen Bischoff – Industrial Mechanic

A GEA employee since: 1989

His three most pronounced character traits: loyal, conscientious, and friendly

His advice for going with the flow: “It’s important to be – and remain – curious!”

Steffen, what exactly does your job at GEA entail?

“I produce cleaners so that industrial plants can supply people with all kinds of food like cheese, blancmange, and beer. I’m not directly involved in their production myself, but I contribute to it by producing cleaners together with my coworkers which ensure that these industrial plants ranging from small to large tanks remain clean and can contribute to clean production. And I see to pretty much everything regarding the final production of these cleaners, from picking the parts and assembly through to testing and packing. I’m fascinated by the fine details that I have to pay attention to in my work.”

You already intimated that you like to work with precision. Is this what you enjoy the most about your job?

“I get a great deal out of being able to focus on one thing. Being focused when working is incredibly important as the components are very delicate. But what I enjoy the most is definitely working with the team. It means a lot to be able to work with colleagues who think along the same lines as me – people who attach importance to rigor, who know the materials have to be processed extra carefully, who are there for each other and can rely on one another. This is definitely the case at GEA and I’m delighted to be part of a team that can be proud of its work.”

You have been with GEA for some time now. Someone with a skill set like yours could certainly work at a lot of other companies. Why have you remained loyal to GEA for so long?

“It’s above all the social aspect that matters to me. It’s the employees who make the company what it is. The company has a very special place in my heart because it has offered me opportunities I could never have imagined.”

That sounds very interesting. Could you go into a little more detail? How is working at GEA something special for you?

“I fled from former East Germany in September 1989 and saw escaping to West Germany as my opportunity to realize my potential. Fortunately for me, GEA was looking for employees with my skills while I was at the transit camp. This is something that really shaped me and which I am very grateful for to this day. And I want to remain a part of this family in the future, too.”
