Steep conditioning by GEA MILLSTAR® combines the benefits of conventional wet dry and dry wet milling for industry-leading performance. Gentle crushing ensures minimal husk breakage which aids natural filtration during lautering. MILLSTAR® also reduces oxidation rates to preserve flavor, improve quality and beer stability.
MILLSTAR® can be configured to suit your own production needs, with throughputs ranging from 2.5 to 40 tons per hour.
GEA MILLSTAR® features a steep conditioning and roller system to gently crush grains, as brewing water is added. For greater efficiency, an inline process takes the resulting mash directly to the mash tun.
Crushing instead of grinding ensures maximum grain extraction and reduces oxygen exposure. The result is higher quality wort for improved flavor, clarity and stability.
MILLSTAR® is a compact, self-supported milling system designed for convenience. The package includes:
• Malt hopper sized for a complete brew.
• Brew water temperature and flow control equipment.
• Conditioning chute for humidity control.
• Heavy duty crushing rollers.
• Hopper for collecting mash.
• Built in eccentric pump for gentle mash transfer.
Improved quality – gentle crushing, maximum grain extraction and reduced oxidation for more stable and consistent beer quality.
Enhanced control – regulate roller speed and adjust roller gap for optimal crushing and husk preservation; steeping water temperature and flow is also adjustable.
Increased efficiency – steep conditioning, crushing and mashing in one compact unit for fast processing and smaller footprint.
Higher throughputs – boost brewhouse capacity with higher lauter tun loads and shave 20% off lautering times thanks to the optimal grist structure.
Expand production – available in different sizes from 2.5t/h to 40t/h to suit a variety of milling tasks.
• Hygienic design ensures effective cleaning.
• Malt to water ratios up to 1:2 (without rinsing) for reliable handling.
• Level control in mash hopper for low oxygen uptake.
• Optimized spray geometry to reduce mash flotation.
• By weighing the MILLSTAR® malt hopper, the malt handling plant is simplified.
• Automated design controls roller speed and adjusts steeping times accordingly (standard for MILLSTAR® 5–40t).
• Steeping water temperature and flow individually adjustable (standard for MILLSTAR® 5–40t).
• Precise and easy adjustment of the crushing roller gap
• Inert gas flushing and mash acidification available as optional features.
• Fewer ATEX protection measures needed thanks to the wet grist.
• GEA specialist regrooving service for up to 12 cycles (up to a total of 15,000 operating hours).
MILLSTAR is registered as a trademark in several countries worldwide.

GEA’s past fiscal year was one of significant growth and further profitability gains. In particular, the technology group substantially increased order intake, with all divisions contributing here. GEA also made progress in all Mission 30 strategic growth areas. In addition, GEA met key interim targets under its climate plan ahead of schedule. Major milestones in fiscal year 2025 were admission to the DAX index, the award of one of the largest contracts in the company’s history, and streamlining of the corporate structure.
