GEA scores a double ‘A’ for its global climate and water stewardship by environmental non-profit organization CDP, confirming GEA as a global leader in tackling climate change and protecting water resources. This achievement puts GEA in second place among the top 14 German companies on CDP’s ‘A List’ and above both the Europe and regional sector averages.

GEA improved its score for its climate protection activities from ‘A-‘ in 2020 to ‘A’ in 2021. For the second year in a row, GEA was awarded ‘A’, the highest possible rating, for its water stewardship. According to CDP, 200 companies globally made this year’s climate ‘A List’ with 118 companies making the water ‘A List’.

“I am very proud that our efforts in engineering for a better world are being recognized by such a prestigious organization. This gives us additional motivation to continue on our sustainable path and to reach our net-zero ambition by 2040,” says Stefan Klebert, CEO GEA. “I would like to thank all our employees for their continuous efforts in reducing our emissions and responsibly managing water resources.”

GEA is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission along its entire value chain by 2040. By 2030 GEA’s greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) will be reduced by 60 percent and Scope 3 emissions by 18 percent (base year 2019). These interim targets make an effective contribution to achieving the 1.5-degree Celsius target of the Paris Climate Agreement and have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

GEA invests in its own operations, its machinery and solutions and also supports customers in producing responsibly and efficiently. Examples range from the world’s first carbon-neutral juice factory in the Netherlands to a milk powder production plant in India which requires minimal fresh water.

CDP’s annual environmental disclosure and scoring process is widely recognized

CDP’s annual environmental disclosure and scoring process is widely recognized as the gold standard of corporate environmental transparency. In 2021, over 590 investors with over US$110 trillion in assets and 200 major purchasers with US$5.5 trillion in procurement spend requested companies to disclose data on environmental impacts, risks, and opportunities through CDP’s platform. A record-breaking 13,000 companies responded.

A detailed and independent methodology is used by CDP to assess these companies, allocating a score of A to D- based on the comprehensiveness of disclosure, awareness and management of environ-mental risks and demonstration of best practices associated with environmental leadership, such as setting ambitious and meaningful targets. Those that don’t disclose or provided insufficient information are marked with an F.
