Effluent Treatment of More Than 3.5 Million Inhabitants
With the first phase of the plant, which was inaugurated in 2001, the waste water treatment plant Stonecutters Island had a capacity of 1.3 million cubic meters of effluent per day, at that time equivalent to approximately half of the entire effluent of the inhabitants of Hong Kong. Since the end of 2009, the second longest cable stayed bridge in the world (approximately 1.6 kilometers long), with a height of around 300 meters and maximum span of more than 1000 meters, has connected Stonecutters Island, and thus the peninsula, with numerous additional islands which are situated off the coast.
Sludge dewatering with GEA decanters
Fitted with deep-pond technology, 14 decanter centrifuges from GEA guarantee a high throughput capacity with low power consumption and low polymer requirement. They are thus able to easily handle the sewage sludge dewatering from 2.45 million cubic meters of waste water per day. The effluent of more than 3.5 million inhabitants can thus be disposed of in this way.
The process of extending and modernizing the waste water treatment plant Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works (SCISTW) in Hong Kong is making good progress. As originally planned, the current work also includes construction of a new sludge dewatering facility, in which GEA will integrate a total of 14 decanter centrifuges. In November 2011, representatives from the government plant operator DSD (Drainage Services Department) as well as the E&M contractor ATAL Engineering and the consultant engineering company ARUP & Partners visited GEA as guests in order to see firsthand the process of decanter production in the Niederahr plant.
The agreement was signed in Hong Kong at the beginning of September 2010. February 2012 saw the first delivery of the electrical equipment, followed in July 2012, after the factory acceptances, by the delivery of the first five decanters; August saw deliveries of the next five decanters and the final four were delivered in September. Commissioning is due to commence at the beginning of 2013, and will continue until 2014. Initial production will start in the second quarter of 2013. The extended waste water treatment plant is expected to operate at full capacity starting in 2015.
