What are functional drinks?
Functional drinks are one of the fastest growing segments in beverages, driven by consumers who want more from what they drink. It’s no longer just about refreshment. People are looking for products that support energy, focus, hydration, immunity, and overall wellbeing.
The category is broad and constantly evolving as new ingredients and claims enter the market. The main drivers are:
Health awareness
Demand for products that support immunity, gut health, and overall wellness continues to rise.Active lifestyles
Products that support hydration, recovery and sustained energy are becoming mainstream.Reduced sugar
Sugar reduction remains a key priority, without compromising taste.Personalization
Growth in targeted benefits such as focus, sleep or stress support.
Energy drinks - powering performance in every can
From ingredient handling to filling and packaging, GEA delivers efficient, flexible energy drink processing solutions that help you achieve consistent quality, reliable production, and faster time to market.
Processing challenges
Functional beverages are more complex than traditional drinks and can include dozens of ingredients, each with its own sensitivities. Adding value often introduces new technical considerations:
- Ingredient stability: Many functional ingredients are sensitive to heat, oxygen or light. Maintaining efficacy and shelf life requires careful process design.
- Mixing and dosing accuracy: Small dosage errors can impact both efficacy and regulatory compliance. Precision in dosing and mixing is critical.
- Shelf life and safety: Products must remain stable over time without compromising safety or performance. Pasteurization and aseptic solutions need to be carefully selected.

Was Wasser wirklich kostet
