What do you do at GEA?
My role is Dairy Engineer at the GEA owned dealership, DairyFlow, based in Scotland. I have worked for DairyFlow since DATE.
I have a varied role which includes installation and maintenance of GEA Farm Technologies milking parlours and bulk tanks across Scotland. I also work on breakdowns which means I am on call one week in every four.
I install a range of GEA parlours including herringbones, rotaries and more recently I project managed the installation of our first MIone automatic milking system.
I am qualified to carry out plumbing, electrical and welding work and will continue to develop my skills by becoming a Parlour Safe accredited technician.
As well as getting my hands dirty I also install and work with farmers on the computer side of things, such as installing DairyPlan, CowScout etc. Also as automation in the industry becomes more popular I need these skills to work with a lot of products including Mullerup automatic feeding and of course the MIone.
What do you love about your job?
I love how varied my job is. I enjoy having a hands on job where I get to travel around the country working on a wide range of tasks.
It’s really satisfying going to a farmer who has a problem and working through to fix it. Also on the installation side when parlours arrive it’s like a big jigsaw to put together. It takes some time to do but nothing beats the satisfaction I get when it’s put together and we’ve milked in. It’s even better when you go back to service or when we have a farm open day and see the farmer enjoying his new parlour.
Then there are the interesting people I meet and work with, whether it be a farmer and his family, colleagues from abroad who come to help on new projects, other GEA dealers they all make my job interesting.
What do you do in your leisure time?
I‘m a huge Manchester United fan, so when I get chance I like to go to Old Trafford and see them play. I haven’t been to see a game this season but hope to get to Old Trafford a few times in the New Year.
I also love the great outdoors and enjoy salmon fishing and shooting as well as socialising with friends.
