Waste not, want not: efficient technologies for processing agricultural biomass
Both digestate from the fermentation of biomass and manure from livestock farming are used as valuable fertilizers in the modern agricultural industry. But strict legal requirements mean that the organic substances and associated excess nutrients need to be appropriately processed to ensure that they are safe and beneficial to spread. GEA provides customer and appropriate processing concepts that not only help to reduce environmental damage over the long term. They also help to considerably improve the economy of biogas systems and agricultural companies.
Using decanters to produce high-quality fertilizers from digestate
Powerful GEA decanters efficiently process digestate by reliably separating the solid particles and dewatering them to a dry free-flowing consistency, thereby ensuring a high dry matter content of up to 30 percent in the solid fraction. As well as lower transportation and spreading costs, customers also benefit from higher income in the fertilizer market. This is because the high separation efficiency the GEA decanters provide ensures that the organic content in the resulting solid fraction remains high. The centrate can also be put back into the fermentation process.
Reducing phosphate and nitrogen content with decanters
GEA decanters are also ideal for processing raw manure, offering users a wide range of benefits. They can efficiently reduce the phosphate and nitrogen content of the liquid manure by separating up to 90 percent of the phosphate and up to 35 percent of the nitrogen compounds with the solids. These free-flowing solids can then be composted and used as a fertilizer. The liquid remainder, meanwhile, is transported to a silo for storage, and can be spread as a natural, high-quality, environmentally friendly fertilizer as needed.
An intelligent manure management system provides a wealth of benefits for dairy and pig farms. If processed correctly, manure can not only provide valuable nutrients for the plants, but can also help to increase a farm's profitability: whether the operator wants to recycle liquid slurry or recover solid content to use in fertilizers or bedding materials.
