At this year's ACHEMA trade fair in Frankfurt (June 11 – 15, 2018, hall 4.0, stand F46), GEA experts from the “Home and Personal Care” (HPC) center of excellence will be discussing trends and technologies for this extremely brand-driven industry with manufacturers of household cleaners, cosmetics and personal care products. The fast-growing middle class and increasing urbanization in developing countries have created markets that barely existed a few years ago. As new markets emerge, so does a new range of customer preferences. To meet the demand, manufacturers have to work with multipurpose lines. GEA sees its role as a process developer – linking individual plant components with smart process technology, whose main focus is on efficiency. The aim is to increase plant availability, utilization and productivity with careful use of resources. In this context, it is important to take advantage of the opportunities offered by digitization and automation in order to ensure product quality, change batches quickly, accurately control formulas and conserve resources.

Flexibility for innovation and production

Only last year, GEA expanded its global “Home and Personal Care” center of excellence in Warrington, UK. Here, GEA pools all its activities for this fast-growing market in order to provide customers with interdisciplinary know-how as well as tactical and strategical support.

“Our strength lies in our flexibility: firstly, in how we plan projects and respond to the needs of our customers. And secondly, in the variability and modularity of our technologies,” says Paul Mullen, who directs the center of excellence as Head of Projects. “Our solutions give the industry the freedom to stay flexible and reproducibly manufacture HPC products that contain particles of every size, composition and density, from crushed seeds in facial scrubs, to fine powders in laundry tablets. We offer customers a secure technological platform for both rapid innovation and large production lines.”

Product recovery systems at ACHEMA

“Pigging systems for product recovery are at the heart of modern process systems for personal care products and have become simply indispensable,” adds GEA sales engineer Falko Fliessbach. “Using this technology, we can recover up to 99 percent of the valuable end product from the pipelines.” GEA will therefore present its VARICOVER® system at the ACHEMA trade fair. GEA engineers recently incorporated this system into the design for a major cosmetics manufacturing project in Thailand – with GEA as technical partner. GEA product recovery solutions are fully compatible with various cleaning-in-place / sterilizing-in-place (CIP / SIP) systems. As a result, pigging systems increase yield, reduce emissions and improve cleaning.

“Many representatives of the home and personal care industry now view production and investment in the context of social responsibility and environmental protection. Fortunately, this is a win-win situation, because environmentally friendly manufacturing processes are generally more economical as well. This, and nothing less, is what consumers want these days,” says Fliessbach. GEA’s process technology and engineering contribute to this, as they lead to efficient, resource-saving and highly flexible solutions for processing valuable viscous products.
