Container Decontamination for ESL Filling

Detail of container decontamination treatment

The choice of container decontamination technology depends largely on the application, the customer’s requirements and the quality, production pasteurization and cold chain temperature of the raw material. GEA offers a range of technologies for container decontamination, which is an essential part of the Extended Shelf Life (ESL) process, including a dry decontamination treatment for PET/HDPE bottles or closures and guarantees an effective and reliable ESL for cold chain distribution.

ESL technology developed by GEA allows the filling of beverages with different pH levels (from high acid to low acid) on the same system.

Dry decontamination is done using a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) treatment that is able to achieve up to a 5 log reduction on A. brasiliensis and up to a 3 log on B. atrophaeus in a cold spot inoculum (challenge) test.

Careful analysis and monitoring of critical control points allows both VHP and CHP treatment to be controlled automatically for high efficiency, reliability and perfect system management.

For caps and foil decontamination applications, the H2O2 treatment guarantees target decontamination levels that comply with ESL standards.
