Inline Blending for Toothpastes and Gels

Toothpastes, gels or dentifrices are thick, soft, moist substances — usually used with a brush — that are formulated to clean and maintain the aesthetics and health of teeth. Mostly produced as mildly abrasive white pastes or clear gels, basic ingredients include an active ingredient such as fluoride, taste, color and rheology modifiers, fillers and preservatives in a liquid base. Toothpaste is an important part of a daily oral healthcare routine and dentists recommend that people use it twice a day.

Precise and Hygienic Mixing

Processing methods vary depending on the product type and ingredients used. Yet, a common and major problem in toothpaste production is aeration. All powders contain a certain amount of air, and the detergent can exacerbate the problem. The mixing process, often done under vacuum, is a crucial step in the production of many personal care products and can help to overcome the aeration challenge.

To meet customer demand, GEA has developed a continuous inline blending unit, specifically for toothpaste, that can effectively mix — within permissible deviation limits of 1% — the base material, coloring and flavoring. The unit is based on the DICONTM continuous inline blender and benefits from specially configured control parameters.
